On July 5, 1945, Firefighter Joseph O. Workman of the Springfield Fire Department died in the line of duty while responding to a fire on East Adams Street. Workman suffered a critical head injury when he fell off the back of Engine 1 near the intersection of Ninth and Monroe Streets. Workman was transported to St. John’s Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries several hours later.
A member of the department for more than twenty years, Workman was survived by his widow, one son, and two grandsons.
