On December 1, 1983, Firefighter Wayne Turpin of the Fairmount-Vance Township Fire Department died in the line of duty while fighting a residential fire on East Vermilion Street. Turpin suffered a heart attack during firefighting operations. He was treated on-scene by other firefighters and transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Funeral services for Turpin were held on December 4, and he was interred at the Homer Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery. He was survived by his widow and two children.
A member of the fire department for more than twenty years, Turpin was the Vance Township Road Commissioner and the owner of Turpin Oil Company.
