On September 22, 1904, Assistant Engineer Robert Freeman of Engine Company No. 44 of the Chicago Fire Department died after accidently falling through the hole surrounding the fire pole at Company Headquarters. Freeman was on the second floor when he lost his footing and fell through the hole.
He became a member of the Department January 31, 1893 and was survived by his widow.
