On December 15, 1919, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter John Baynes of Truck 22 was fatally injured while responding to a fire on North Western Avenue. Truck 22 was traveling west on Winnemac Avenue when a streetcar crashed into it and overturned the fire truck. Baynes suffered a skull fracture and broken ribs when he and two other firefighters were pinned under the apparatus, and he died from his injuries the following day, December 16.
