On February 2, 2007, Firefighter Michael Fox of the Vergennes Fire Department suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty. Fox began to have trouble breathing while he was driving an ambulance in response to an EMS call. He lost consciousness soon after pulling the ambulance to the side of the road, and he was transported to the hospital, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
A member of the department for twenty years, Fox was an active fire safety education instructor at local schools.
