On November 11, 1960, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Robert Arp died in the line of duty while fighting a house fire on Race Street. Arp was a permanent member of Engine 96, but he was on temporary assignment with Engine 67 on the day of the blaze. Arp and two other firefighters were operating on the second floor of the house when the rapid spread of the fire forced them to retreat. Once outside, Arp collapsed and was taken to St. Anne’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
