On January 20, 1962, Chicago Fire Department Captain Harold F. Gleich of Engine 22 was killed in the line of duty while fighting a fire in a vacant apartment building on Belden Avenue. Gleich was overcome by smoke and collapsed while moving a hose line into the basement of the building. He was transported to Grant Hospital where he was pronounced dead, and the funeral mass was held on January 24, 1962, at St. Angela’s Church.
