On October 22, 1949, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Walter Iwanski of Engine 33 died in the line of duty while on duty at his firehouse on Clybourn Avenue. Iwanski suffered a fatal heart attack while he was on watch in the station control room, and he was discovered by firefighters who were investigating his failure to turn off an automatic fire alarm that was ringing in the bunkroom. He was survived by his widow and two sons.
