On December 24, 1943, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Louis E. Kahler of Engine 14 suffered fatal injuries while fighting a fire at a Bellevue Place rooming house. Kahler sustained head injuries when he fell to the ground after the ladder he was standing on broke. He died later that day at Henrotin Hospital, and was survived by his widow and four children.
