On September 3, 1941, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter James Mehigan of Truck 15 died in the line of duty while responding to a fire alarm. Mehigan was thrown from the fire apparatus at the intersection of 47th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, one block away from the firehouse.
