Incident Summary
On July 18, 1930, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Victor Johnson of Truck 35 died in the line of duty on a day of near-record heat in Chicago. Johnson was drilling with Engine 42 at the department’s training ground on Schor Street when he collapsed after dragging a hose line to the roof of the drill house. An inhalator squad attempted to revive him for more than an hour, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Johnson was survived by his widow and six children.
