On April 23, 2004, Alan David Toepke, a U.S. Forest Service firefighter with the Midewin Interagency Hotshot Crew, died in the line of duty after he was struck by a vehicle in West Memphis, Arkansas. Toepke and his crew were returning to their headquarters in Wilmington, Illinois, after contributing to firefighting efforts in the Apalachicola National Forest in Florida. Toepke died from his injuries the following day, April 24.
