On January 31, 1929, Chicago Fire Department Pipeman John J. Carey of Squad 8 died in the line of duty while fighting a 4-11 alarm fire at the South Shore Wet Wash Laundry on South Chicago Avenue. Carey was killed, and five other firefighters were injured, when the roof and one wall of the burning two-story building collapsed onto them. Carey suffered a fractured skull and was transported to Jackson Park Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
