Incident Summary
On November 30, 1921, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter James English of Engine 32 was fatally injured in the line of duty while responding to a fire at the intersection of State and Illinois Streets. A fourteen year veteran of the department, English was severely injured when Engine 32 overturned while avoiding a collision with another fire truck. He was treated at Chicago Polyclinic Hospital, where his right leg was amputated. English survived for two days, during which time Firefighter James Cotter of Truck 9 donated three quarts of blood for transfusions for his injured colleague, but English succumbed to his injuries on December 2. He was survived by his widow and two children.
